May in Pictures

Well May you were manic, absolutely manic. The last month has been so busy, it was almost like everyone decided that deadlines, important events & the business of life in general should all happen at once. In saying that though, May was marvelous & quite a few amazing things happened. Some which I am still trying to get my head around.

Anyway, here's a look at some of the photos I documented this month, as always with the help of the ever-faithful Instagram. Enjoy!

1. Heroine from MAC's Reel Sexy range was one of the last purchases I made before the '30 Day Challenge' officially started and I haven't regretted it. It's only been worn a couple of times this month but when I have I've noticed how wearable it is & how long-lasting it is as well.

2. We went to the Langham Hotel for High Tea a couple of Friday's ago & this is a sample of what we enjoyed. See those scones? Those were fresh out of the oven when we had them & they tasted amazing.

3. Earlier in the year I purchased a 365 journal from Kikki K with the intentions of documenting everything from the day I was grateful for & occasionally random pieces of writing. It was going extremely smoothly until I went back to University. In the last couple of weeks though I've been writing in it again & hopefully I don't go off track again.

So if anyone ever finds my iPod, there's a high chance they'd be rather confused by my music selection. After all, there is a rather unusual mix on there. A fair portion of that selection is Broadway Cast recordings given that I love Musical Theatre.

Without further ado, here's four of the musical theatre songs I've been listening to lately. This is only a small selection, there are countless more, but we'd be here all day if I shared everything.

1.  My Eyes Adored You from Jersey Boys. Personally I think this version is better than the original. Maybe it's the placing of it on stage, during the scene where Frankie & Mary Delgado split, but it is beautiful on the CD & even more so live.

2. I've Never Been To Me from Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Again this is beautiful live as it is performed by one of the Divas above the stage & then reinterpreted on stage by one of the drag queens. It's just stunning to watch & this rendition by Chrissy O'Neil is stunning.

3. Step In Time from Mary Poppins. This version is quite different to the film version of the song & is definitely a lot more entertaining to watch. It's one of those numbers that are just so catchy & guaranteed to leave you wanting to pick up tap-dancing.

4. Science Fiction from Rocky Horror. There's something about this song, I'm not sure what it is but I love it. When I saw the stage show it was sung by a cast member dressed as a cinema usher from another era. It was one of my favourite moments in the show.

Products I Love: The Sleepwear Edition.

When I think of sleepwear, flattery, comfort and style don't usually come to mind. That all changed when these were given to me last year as a birthday gift:

Aren't they cute? And they even have pockets! How often do pyjama pants have pockets? Perfect iPod storage solution when you're lying in bed.

So who designs such stylish sleepwear? Peter Alexander of course. Believe it or not, he was voted less likely to succeed in high school. Since identifying a gap in the Australian market for stylish women's sleepwear his popularity has soared. His brand was established in 2000 and he has opened stores in every state of Australia as well as several throughout New Zealand. For international readers, don't fret, Peter has an online store.

Alexander McQueen was an artist first and foremost, a true visionary whose rise to fame has been widely chronicled. After completing his MA in Fashion at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, he became head designer at Givenchy and then joined the Gucci Group. It was with this backing that his own brand was born.

What I Love Weekly #5.

1. I will be seeing Florence Welch in three sleeps! I've been waiting for this since October/November last year. This weekend I am making signs for myself & my friends to carry, and getting crazy excited. Watch this space.

2. Cheap but decent coffee. My coffee was undercharged on Monday. It tasted so much better after that.

3. "Thank you! Hold the dream." That tweet was to me from Kirstie Clements, former Editor in Chief of Vogue Australia. Her departure left me rather miserable one afternoon earlier in the week, so I naturally was thinking about how much she'd be missed from the magazine & all the amazing things she did for it during her tenure. She is going to go on to something equally amazing though, I know it.

4.  Last week I asked someone what the best piece of advice they've ever been given was. They said; "Don't sweat the small stuff. That can pretty much get you through anything." We talked about it for a bit and it is absolutely true. Think about any problem or frustration you have and then tell yourself this. Did that problem all of a sudden become less of a deal? It works wonders.

I told you I was psychic! Look what came home with me yesterday. Lula was sitting in my letterbox when I came home as well. I love getting things in the mail.

Winter Wonders: What's on my Wishlist.

There's no point denying it anymore. Winter is days away for those of us in the Southern Hemisphere. Now is the time to bring out big warm coats, scarves & practical, but always fashionable clothing. I've compiled a list of what I'd love to add to my wardrobe this winter. As always it's about investment pieces & classic designs which will last & not outdate as easily in years to come.

WARNING: Graphic content from about 2:39. Stop watching at this point if you don't like blood & gore.

This week's song comes from the very lovely, Kate Miller-Heidke. For those of you who aren't familiar with Kate she is an Australian singer & songwriter, hailing from Brisbane. She has released four albums and has won three ARIA awards.

I'll Change My Mind is an upbeat love song with rather sad lyrics. Kate says it is about a woman stalking her ex whom she can't get over. She waits outside his house and hopes that when he sees her that he'll decide he wants her back. "It's just a futile hope. If you listen to the lyrics, she's never going to change his mind; she's deluded."

There is something so fascinating about icons and their tragic demises. Maybe it's the way in which the media orchestrates it. Maybe we are all genuinely fascinated. Regardless of how you came to hear of Natasha Richardson, she was acting royalty on both stage and screen.

Natasha was the daughter of acclaimed actress Vanessa Redgrave and director Tony Richardson. She was also an advocate for amFAR an American charity funding AIDS research. She helped them raise millions of dollars towards the cause.

What I Love Weekly #4

1. This interview by Daniel Radcliffe of his conversation with Helena Bonham Carter. "F**k it is my guiding philosophy." Read it, enjoy it, fall in love with Helena.

2. Not buying a Fashion Set at MAC. Don't get too excited by this, you have been warned! The colour I really liked was not as amazing as it looked in the photos online, and none of the other colours from the Asia-Pacific collection really appealed to me. So yay! I saved 106 dollars.

3. High tea in fancy places. Today I am taking Mum to The Langham as a late Mother's Day treat. Looking forward to tea, china, pretty place settings and mini food. Oh and dressing up for the occasion!

4. Dressing up lips. This week I've been rotating my lip colours quite a bit. It's always a nice way to add something extra to a look if you don't want to go too extreme with accessories.

5. Perfume counters. They're like a playground to me. Seriously. I spritzed myself with Dolce & Gabbana's The One before an important event yesterday (see 7). It's a favourite of one of my friend's and I felt so sophisticated wearing it. Also loving Elie Saab's signature perfume. It is to die for.

The Reading Pile.

I have been so busy lately that I haven't had a lot of time to complete any of the books on my bookpile this month. So I thought I'd look at one of the many magazines I read. This is one I read religiously, and since I first bought a copy back in 2009, I haven't missed a single issue.

Today I bring you an Australian gem, Frankie Magazine.

Pictured is every single issue I own, all 21 of them. Can you tell I love Frankie?

This week's song remains one of my firm favourites. I know you're supposed to have one favourite of everything, but how unrealistic is that??

A Case of You is one of Joni Mitchell's most popular songs. and was featured on her 1971 album, Blue.  She was accompanied by James Taylor on guitar for the recording and she has re-recorded the track a couple of times.

This song was voted #1 by BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Disc listeners & has been covered by a number of artists.

"I am a lonely painter. I live in a box of paints. I'm frightened by the devil, and I'm drawn to those who ain't afraid."

A little something, Editorials I love.

Just a short post today! Here's some highlights from recent editorials which I've loved as of late. My favourite is probably the Lula cover with those bejeweled sunglasses.  They're all such classic images though, it's hard to not fall in love with them all...

I have to be honest here. For a while, I wouldn't admit I liked this week's muse. Don't ask why, it just didn't seem very cool. It wasn't until the rise in recent years of the heavily manufactured, image-controlled starlets that I realised how awesome Taylor Swift really is. Not to mention this interview from 'US Vogue' and how fantastic she is live.

Stevie Nicks describes her as the girl who writes the songs that "make the whole world sing" and that's definitely true given her phenomenal universal appeal. Swift has become famous for her music which literally reads like diary entries from her personal life. It is this realness which explains her connectivity to her fans of all ages. We all can go 'yes this has happened to me' when listening to at least one of her songs.

MAC Me Coordinated, Classy & Fabulous!

My Twitter feed was abuzz with chatter surrounding two of the things I love this week; MAC and Fashion. When I saw people talking about MAC's Fashion Sets, I knew that an investigation was going to be necessary and likely to lead to makeup gold at the end of the rainbow. Boy was I right! I love coordinating lip products and nail colours, so MAC's latest range has me excited by all the colour possibilities.

MAC say; Rebel in New York, Saint Germain in Seoul, Morange in Paris, Russian Red in Dubai-the must have lip-shades are coveted by MAC fans around the world...we created 3-piece mini collections of Lipstick, Lipglass and Nail Lacquer trios. 7 classic pallettes. Perfectly coordinated, regionally inspired.

New Zealand will be stocking the Asia-Pacific collection which will feature the following shades; Peachstock, Razzledazzler, Ravishing, Angel, Saint Germain, Morange and Impassioned. So far Impassioned is atop my wishlist, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we get the Russian Red set as well.

MAC's Fashion Sets collection will be on New Zealand MAC Counters this Monday. As they are based on our most treasured colours, these won't stay on the shelves for long. Get in quick to ensure you don't miss out!

What I Love Weekly #3

1.  It's always awesome when someone unexpectedly gives you one of the nicest compliments. Even more so when you regard them highly. Thank you, you know who you are.

2.  Realising how genuine some people are. I find this really comforting. Knowing there are completely genuine people who love what they do, and do so with the best of intentions is amazing.

3.  Receiving cute things in the mail. I love getting mail almost as much as I love sending it. So when a card from Cecylia made its way into my letterbox, my day was made a bit brighter. A lovely discount voucher arrived from Space Pearls' Etsy store as well. Thank you ladies xx.
