Four Vlogger Books Worth The Hype

Four Vlogger Books Worth The Hype

Where I can, I love to support Team Internet and while there's some mixed opinions about Team Internet and their accessibility to book deals, I for one think it's a good thing. Yes some of the books may be of questionable merit, however if they're getting people reading and excited about books it's a win for everyone. Today though I want to bring things back to four of the best books by vloggers, in my opinion. These would all make fantastic gifts, especially if the person you're buying for is already a fan of said author. There's something for the lifestyle lover, beauty aficionado, foodie and humorist and honestly, I rate all these books quite highly. More on that below...

Bloom: Navigating Life and Style* by Estee Lalonde-Estee has long been one of my favourite YouTubers and bloggers. Her enthusiasm is just infectious and I love the aesthetic that she curates for herself, her home and in general really. I have a girl crush on Estee Lalonde, okay? Now that's out of the way, Bloom is a meticulously designed, carefully curated treasure trove of content themed around the categories of; life, people, work, beauty, fashion, home, travel and food. Bloom shines a light on Estee's story and passions. As well as being beautifully presented, it offers a very relatable insight. I found myself laughing and crying at times reading this. It's definitely one for the Estee fangirls among us but even newbies should have a peruse of this.

Face by Sam and Nic Chapman-Like Estee, I have long been a fan and lover of Sam and Nic, aka Pixiwoo's work. I'm sure many of us own one, if not several of their amazing Real Techniques brushes as well. Their new book which has been a number of years in the making does not disappoint. It's an absolute encyclopedia of beauty knowledge and is presented in a way that doesn't feel condescending. It's just like reading a transcript of one of Sam and Nic's many tutorials but better. There's also an app to accompany the book which gives readers the chance to watch videos and see what is being written on put into use. It's beautifully presented as you would expect and beauty-lovers alike would love this. I'm enjoying slowly making my way through it so I can savour its contents for as long as possible.

Eat Smart* by Niomi Smart-As I said last month, this was perhaps a bit of an unusual book request for me and while I still haven't had time to really play around with any of the recipes yet, I have a ton bookmarked. The smoothies all sound absolutely delicious and given the number of times I frequented Boost in Melbourne, I'd love to recreate some at home. As well as recipes, Niomi also shares insight into her own lifestyle journey and what led her towards a more plant-based lifestyle. Again, it's beautifully presented and while there is the odd obscure ingredient, most of the recipes can be made with items in your pantry and seasonal fruits. I'm all for books that make the most of ingredients people actually don't have to go on a wild goose chase for. I'm really looking forward to making some of the non-alcoholic cocktails and iceblocks in the coming weeks, along with virtually 20 or so other things I have bookmarked.

You Deserve A Drink by Mamrie Hart-Not pictured but equally as worth mentioning is Mamrie's book with the tagline 'boozy misadventures and tales of debauchery'. Each essay is accompanied by the recipe for an alcoholic beverage, would you expect any less from the lady whose YouTube channel is called You Deserve A Drink? It's hilarious, laugh out loud funny and brilliantly written. If you know someone who loves a good humour laden essay, this is the book for them.

Favourite Reads of 2015: Part Two

Favourite Reads of 2015: Part Two

2015 may be done and dusted but judging by the state of my subscription boxes, the favourite declarations are nowhere near over. Today I'm finishing up my favourite reads for 2015. There's a fair few YA novels in the mix and also some of the best, diverse memoirs I have read in a long time. Enjoy!

Am I Normal Yet by Holly Bourne, not pictured-This was a library book, hence the lack of photographic evidence that it was read but trust me, it was! Am I Normal Yet is another book that explores the topic of mental illness, this time anxiety along with obsessive compulsive disorder and to an extent, depression. I remember really enjoying this and found myself identifying with aspects of this story as well as my own high school experience. There's something very special about Holly's writing, I have read two of her books now and I highly recommend you give them a read.

Wild by Cheryl Strayed-I really wasn't expecting to like this book as much as I did but I loved it. Given I know next to nothing about tramping and the American outdoors I've found it extremely interesting. Cheryl Strayed sets out to hike the Pacific Crest Trail in an attempt to rediscover herself and reflect on the last few years of her life, since her mother's passing. It's a true story which makes it all the more amazing and inspiring. The movie is just as good as the book too.

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell-From memory this was one of the first books I read last year but I remember soaring through it because it was such an addicting, captivating read. Set in the eighties, minus all those pop culture stereotypes we know and love, it tells the story of two teenaged outcasts whose paths cross on the school bus. They bond over a love of mixtapes and comic books and the rest as they say is history.

Reckoning by Magda Szubanski*-There were quite a few memoirs read by me last year which isn't that surprising given it's one of my favourite genres. Magda's book explores two key threads of her life; her Dad's polish upbringing and involvement in WW2 and her sexuality. In among that there is snippets about how she became one of Australia's most-loved comediennes. It's one of the most interesting, insightful memoirs I've read in a long time and it was one of those books I couldn't put down from the beginning. Forget what you know about Magda already, there is so much more to her.

Submarine by Joe Dunthorne, not pictured-Thanks to Emma for going on about this book+movie because it got me intrigued and this ended up being one of my favourite books of the year. Dunthorne's writing reminds me a lot of Nick Hornby which is a good thing, obviously. Submarine tells the story of Oliver Tate, a British high school student in the midst of his GCSE's and on the path to understanding the complexities of the teenage girl brain, or in his case, Jordana's mind. Each chapter is constructed as a diary-like entry so it's a quick read. This book is so hilarious though and at times a bit sad but the dialogue and Oliver's thought process were so entertaining to discover. I highly recommend you give this one a read if you haven't already done so.

You Deserve A Drink by Mamrie Hart-I really have Joan Rivers and Grace Helbig to thank for the discovery of Mamrie Hart. She's one entertaining lady and she makes a rather extraordinary cocktail, if her videos are anything to go by. You Deserve A Drink is presented as a book of boozy misadventures and tales of debauchery. To accompany each story there's a cocktail so if you wanted you could become the Julie and Julia equivalent of cocktail creation. Drink responsibly kids. I'm really looking forward to starting this and am expecting hilarity.

October Favourites

October Favourites

October's really been a month for favourites, with two posts on the cards of things I loved and feel deserve some airtime around these parts. Today it's all about the non-beauty favourites that have taken a piece of my heart this month...

London Rebel Kalila Sandals x Number One Shoes-Gladiator sandals are going to be the kind of shoe you like or loathe, but thanks to a pair of Balenciaga sandals that were popular a few years back I've always loved them. I had some that I wore until the straps were broken. I'd been wanting some more and when Number One Shoes had an awesome deal on shoes a few weeks back, these had to come home with me. They're so comfortable and aren't totally flat so you get a little bit of height from them too. I love them and  know they're going to get worn to death.

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes*-This book though. Wow. It tells the story of Lou, a twenty-something Brit who has just lost her regular job and ends up working as a caregiver for a wheelchair bound man, Will. Little does she know that Will is going to change her life and encourage her to start living. I don't want to say too much about this book because it's one of those texts you need to read and fall in love with on your own. I highly recommend it though.

Wild EP by Troye Sivan-I've had this ep in my car this month and it's been on high rotation ever since. Troye's music gives me Summer vibes and I daydream of days poolside whilst I'm listening to it. The title track is my favourite but the whole thing is awesome.

Yen Magazine-Yen was a magazine I used to read a lot back in the day but it's only really been in the last year that I've been picking it up regularly again. Each issue has a theme-this one's all about travel and follow the themes of wanderlust, adventures and a bit of "pop culture pilgrimage". Yen is like the cool older sibling you never had in paper form. It's also great for photography and art inspiration too. If you're in NZ or Aus, grab a copy if you've not read it before.

Scream Queens-I'm cheating a bit here as I only really started watching this at the beginning of the week. One of my friends has been on at me to watch this all month and I kinda put it off because I thought it was going to be too scary. I don't do well with horror-anything. Surprisingly though this isn't scaring me, although I don't think I'm going to be able to look at chainsaws normally for some time. Part comedy-part thriller, part whodunnit, this show is brilliant. The fashion is amazing, especially for the Chanels and the sass levels+shade throwing are on point. Emma Roberts is amazing as Chanel Oberlin. Watch it if you haven't yet and be prepared to become addicted.

You Deserve A Drink by Mamrie Hart-Mamrie's channel has become one of my favourites this year. She creates lighthearted, hilarious videos with many a popular culture themed pun and a delicious beverage to try. I knew her book of life essays and escapades was going to be fantastic and it does not disappoint. It was laugh out loud funny-her story about her Uber trip to Las Vegas to see Britney Spears stands out but there's so many amusing anecdotes in this book.

-Have the absolute best weekends out everybody! Halloween's not that big of a deal in NZ, so I probably won't be celebrating although I might have a lil' candy+Scream Queens sesh to honour the occasion. I've also got some more coursework to get through+some extra work-themed things to do so I'll probably be making my way through those too. Have a good one, and I'll see you on Monday with November's reading list! x
