Things I Watched & Liked In 2017
Subtitle, some things I watched and liked. If I listed them all, we'd be here all day. So I'm feelin' reflective and retrospective-y now that 2017 is on its way out of here. I also know how good the holidays are for unwinding and doing very little, which can often mean a good old binge session. Mornings curled up with coffee and lazing around in your pyjamas whilst watching a film or TV series? Yes please...
Stranger Things: It took me a bit longer than everyone else to watch this because truth be told, I was scared. The thing is, it's really not that scary. The dramatic tension and anxiety is really the only side effect to this program. That and perhaps emotional investment in the characters. Ahem, Justice for Barb and the idea that Joyce and Will Byers have a nice year. If you're yet to discover this Netflix series, get onto it. It's your classic, eighties ET/Stephen King tribute among other things and it is brilliant.
Franca-Chaos & Creation: Another Netflix gem. I'm not sponsored by Netflix just for disclosure. I wish. Anyway, this documentary, directed+produced by Sozzani's son is a candid, intimate insight into the legendary mind and genius of Franca Sozzani. She was the editor of Vogue Italia until her passing and was a major game changer in the world of fashion magazines. She wasn't afraid to start a conversation and made her magazine so much more than just a collection of pretty pictures. Well worth the watch.
Will and Grace: Bit late to the party here, whoops but I am on the WAG bandwagon and am loving it. The only highlight of a weekend I spent bed bound was the all-day WAG marathon on TV. Karen Walker is my (sorta) spirit animal and the hilarity and brilliance of this whole show never fails to make my day. Honestly I can be having the worst day and WAG can just magically remedy that for twenty minutes. Or more because let's be honest, I tend to often watch more than one episode at a time.
Beauty and the Beast: The remake, obvs. I haven't been living under a rock and missed the nineties incarnation. Disney did the live-action version so much justice. The attention to detail and of course the casting was all magic. I actually had the cast recording in my car's stereo for a good while. In other words, many a dramatic car singalong happened. No shame.
La La Land: Another soundtrack that had a good whirl and a freakin' beautiful film. Cinematically and of course the combination of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. I loved how this movie paid homage to the classic Hollywood musicals and was essentially a love-letter to creatives and 'fools who dream' everywhere. Plus, Ryan Gosling playing the piano. Yes.
The People vs OJ Simpson: Oh wow, this show. I was riveted and fascinated and totally hooked. I'm not usually into crime related shows at all but I found this incredibly interesting. I think the fact it looks at the major role the media and power of celebrity can play was what really drew me in. That and the OJ Simpson case itself really foreshadowed a lot of what we see in the media now. In fact at times I was really mind blown at what was already happening with the treatment of celebrities twenty or so years back. I feel like that was quite a nerdy analysis but seriously. Really brilliant drama. Watch.
Thirteen Reasons Why: What an important program. So important and I really hope the negativity and skepticism surrounding it hasn't clouded anyone's judgement. The story of Hannah Baker, a teenaged girl who commits suicide and leaves behind a series of cassette tapes, documenting the reasons why is confronting and at times difficult to watch. Again though it really got the discussion around mental health going and I'm sure will have encouraged some people to make positive changes to their lives for the better. A second series is in the works, following on from where the book leaves off so it will be interesting to see how the aftermath of her passing continues to unfold and how it affects the community she leaves behind.

Five Things | July
It feels like I only just compiled one of these posts, the reality is of course that the last one went live over a month ago. Today we have a mix of fashion, music, books and life-type things in the mix because why not?
Changes British Vogue style: Never one to do things by halves it seems, after Alexandra Shulman's departure and Edward Enninful's takeover of the title, we have seen a flurry of staff changes. That may be natural with such a creative endeavour as producing such a notoriously iconic title but it's also bound to ruffle a few feathers, couture or otherwise. The most surprising of all was learning that Lucinda Chambers was dismissed from the title, after twenty five years alongside Alex and another eleven at the magazine. Chambers appeared in an interview with niche publication, Vestoj. It's done the rounds by now and due to legal issues, it has been edited and condensed somewhat. If you want a read, you can do so here. I found this quote particularly poignant: "you're not allowed allowed to fail in fashion-especially in this age of social media, when everything is about leading a successful, amazing life. Nobody today is allowed to fail, instead the prospect causes anxiety and terror. But why can't we celebrate failure? After all, it helps us grow and develop."
Melodrama: Last month Ella aka Lorde released her second album and it has not disappointed. I'm sure we all know the stories behind this album by now, said to chronicle a house party Lorde threw and the aftermath of it. It looks at love and loss, heartbreak, reminiscence and nostalgia. Most of all it is about survival and the strength we find in our "secret powers". Yellich O'Connor and Jack Antonoff are a perfect pairing and their talents combined make this one treat of a record. My favourite tracks are; Writer In The Dark, Hard Feelings/Loveless and The Louvre but I really love the whole entire thing.
Without A Doubt: After finishing The People v OJ Simpson last week, I knew I badly wanted to read this book. I think a few of the legal faces involved have written about this trial actually but Marcia's was the one I wanted to read. I'm only about a quarter through it so far but it is good. Really good. If you enjoyed the show, this expands on everything and is equally as fascinating.
Mindfulness: < It's a word that probably divides a few people. Over the last couple of months I've been making a few lifestyle changes, relating to this word. I'm not going to elaborate beyond that for now but I wanted to talk briefly about mindfulness exercises. There are a bunch of apps, YouTube clips etc so you don't necessarily have to start a subscription. I use Headspace though and find taking ten minutes to do the exercises is such a game changer for me. There are basic exercises to get you used to the initial idea of shifting your focus but also on categories like self esteem, anxiety etc. I actually do two lots of ten minutes, one in the morning and one late afternoon or during the evening. If you're someone who has a mind that doesn't seem to shut off, I highly recommend it.
Wisdom from Lorelai IRL: This quote is from Lauren Graham's newest book and I wanted to share it because it's really apt. Whether or not you're currently on the 'struggle is real' avenue or just feeling a bit lost, keep this in mind. "Life doesn't often spell things out for you or give you exactly what you want when you want it, otherwise it wouldn't be called life, it would be called vending machine. It's hard to say when exactly it will happen, and it's true that whatever you're after may not drop down the moment you spend all your quarters, but someday soon a train is coming. In fact, it may already be on the way. You just don't know yet."

June Favourites
June has vanished just like that and it's been an..interesting month for lack of a better word. Today though, it's time to talk about what I loved in June because there were a few products and miscellaneous bits 'n pieces that definitely did stand out.
NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer: NARS' Radiant Creamy Concealer is my go-to and I've been through countless tubes of it now. I love the stuff. Lately when I've had a bit more time on my hands for makeup or want to quickly touch up with concealer, it's this I've been reaching for. I have the shade Creme Brulee, the third lightest and find it the perfect match. It's pretty heavy duty without being too thick so I like it for blemish concealing and also for redness. My favourite way to apply it is with the detailer brush x Real Techniques for pinpoint concealing a la Lisa Eldridge. I highly rate the NARS concealers if you're after a newbie.
The People vs OJ Simpson: Everyone is probably over hearing me wax lyrical on this show now. I think this is possibly the third post it's made its way into this month now, whoops. Having been way too young to remember the OJ Simpson trial the first time around, I found this so fascinating. It was particularly telling of the way media world, celebrity culture and the like were headed. The way in which Marcia Clark, played by Sarah Paulson was depicted by the media and treated despite being the head prosecutor was quite disgusting for lack of a better word. The comments made to her by the judge and members of the defense were unbelievable and as Paulson put it, wouldn't have been made to a male lawyer. The way it looks at sexism and the way media and the court of law in this case can skew perceptions really appealed to me. Such a brilliant show.
Balm Dotcom x Glossier: The hype with this one is real. Right on cue my lips have turned to their reliable, mosaic-y selves now it's Winter. Tried to make that description as non-graphic as possible for you all. This though is a saving grace. I have the Coconut Balm Dotcom which smells delightful, although it definitely gives me a caramel popcorn vibe which doesn't really matter because I like it. It's a multi-use product so while many people probably use it as a lip balm, I also love to apply it on my eyelids. Glossy lids without the tacky texture? Yes please. I've also been using it where I have dryness on my hands and around my fingers as well. If you make an order from Glossier you need to get yourself one of these too. Oh and a quick PSA, this is how I shop Glossier.
Antipodes Moisture Boost Natural Lipstick* in Queenstown Hot Chocolate: Antipodes has been a staple of my skincare routine in the past but at the moment it's their lipsticks I am particularly taken by. This shade has been my most-used, aptly named Queenstown Hot Chocolate for it's brown based, dusky pink properties. The satiny formula is so comfortable to wear on the lips and it's the kind of colour that will stick around. I also love the shade South Pacific Coral if you're after something a bit more vibrant.
British Vogue, April 2017: So I've been reading my issues of British Vogue out of order for reasons unknown. Anyway, I read the April issue this month and loved some of the articles so I wanted to mention them here. The cover story with Kate Moss about her modeling agency was particularly insightful and I loved hearing what she had to say about taking a more behind the scenes role. There was also a particularly brilliant one called Single Minded by Bella Mackie. It looked at why not having a partner in your thirties isn't necessarily a sign of inadequacy and I just loved the positivity it shined on the perks of flying solo. I love British Vogue though and highly rate it if you want a brilliant fashion magazine, combining journalism with editorial and arts+culture.
Journalling: In the last few weeks I've been putting pen to paper again and just writing down my thoughts and musings. It's so therapeutic but also it's a nice little sentimental thing to look back on. I'm particularly loving using my Muji notebook to write down five good things from each day. It's so easy to forget the good and the smaller details that are actually really quite rad. Highly recommend it if you want to end your day on a more positive note.
