March In Pictures

Well March, you have been marvellous, you've been magnificent and incredibly busy to boot. So it comes as no surprise really that I'm sad to see you slip away. In spite of that however, April is going to be an incredibly exciting time so while one door may be closing, another is swiftly being opened.

Here are some of the photographic highlights from the month that was:

Hollywood is the second single from Marina And The Diamond's debut album The Family Jewels, released in 2010.  When asked why this track was chosen as a single Marina said; "This is who I was. Hollywood infected my brain and I really valued the wrong things in life, but I changed dramatically. This obsession with celebrity culture is really unhealthy. I don't want to live my life like that and I don't want to be a typical pop star."

Your mind is just like mine, all filled up with things benign.

Curios I desire

Lady Gaga sings of being addicted to a life of material, and as one of my dear friends would say, we want all the things. Isn't this sentiment true of many of us in the Western World? Each season I try to buy at least one new complete outfit and then a few key pieces. I tend to not buy into trends so much and instead favour classic pieces which can easily be worn again. With that in mind, here are some pieces I've found for Winter 2012 which, whether we like it or not is fast approaching the Southern Hemisphere.

"She possesses a realness...' Anna Wintour writes; 'sincerely lacking in today's reality-obsessed world'. Indeed Adele maintains an authentic image, rather than deliberately branding herself, and it is the 'realness' Wintour writes of that resonates with her legions of fans.

Ever since I first heard Rain On Your Parade in a film a couple of years back, I was enchanted by the song. It was originally released on a deluxe edition of Welsh singer Duffy's debut album Rockferry in 2008 and was received well by critics, who praised Duffy's vocals on the track. Duffy is currently taking an extended hiatus before returning to the studio to record her highly anticipated third album, which'll hopefully be very soon!

'Cause I know in time you'll see what you did to me, and you'll come running back...

So this is a new feature I'm trialling which may eventually replace Monday Muse. The MAC post from last week has proven to be quite popular so I've decided to continue down that path with another beauty themed post. Enjoy!

This English beauty is hands down a master of style, and while many argue that a lot of models have this technique refined to an art, none of them achieve it as effortlessly as the one and only Kate Moss.

How the tides turned (twice).

There's a quote which reads "don't let your mind wander, it is too dangerous to be let out on its own." This idea becomes increasingly clear when left to one's own devices, but is this contemplation for the better?

New Zealand Fashion Festival and what it taught me-Part 2.

Wednesday night of the festival saw a tribe of black clad fashionistas arriving at Shed 10 ready to learn from the makeup maestros that are MAC Cosmetics. The technique seminar was titled 'On Trend' and explored some of the hottest runway looks which could then be practiced later at home.

There's my friend and I in the front row! Thanks Dani for this photo.

Valerie is a track which was covered by Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson for Ronson's album in 2007. It was released as the third single of the album, was Amy's most successful chart entry in the UK and was declared only second to none after her  album Back to Black.

Quite a few friends of mine have been commenting on how this track can turn around a bad mood, no matter what may be happening in their personal lives and that is certainly true. I think that's also why Amy's cover has such resonance with both her loyal fans and radio listeners alike.

As I write this, Suddenly I See is playing, and the words "a million girls would kill for this job" echo through my mind.  That assumption of Emily's onscreen in The Devil Wears Prada is certainly true of this week's muse, Amy Astley.

Before Astley landed her dream job as Editor in Chief of Teen Vogue, she was training to become a professional ballerina. She started out at House and Garden before transferring to Vogue then settling where she is today. Huge achievements, but perhaps what Amy is most proud of is establishing Teen Vogue's Fashion U, along with their CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) scholarship nurturing young talent.

When I was young my aunt used to send me magazines in the mail regularly which sparked my interest in them, and ever since I've remained extremely mesmerised. To be doing what Amy does for Teen Vogue would be an absolute dream. Hopefully I will one day be writing for Conde Nast!

Inside my dream house!

I've always loved interiors. There's something about the way in which people choose to decorate their homes and display items that draws me in, especially if it is done well. If I could draw, and was more artistic, I'd probably be an interior designer but since I'm not, admiring gorgeous homes and room designs is as close as I'll  get!

Here's how my three, (yes three as they would be ample to house my fashion library) would look in an ideal world.

'I'll Be Waiting' is one of the many standout tracks on Adele's latest album, 21. It is widely chronicled that this album is about a breakup of Adele's and this song is one of the more upbeat ones! I love the lyrics in this particular one as they seem optimistic in the sense that she is moving on but part of her will still be there if her former lover decides to come back to her.

The clip above is from her 'Live at the Royal Albert Hall' DVD. It is a seriously entertaining record of her performance, as you'll see from the opening segment and Adele continues to chat and engage her audience throughout. So if you're an Adele fan then I highly recommend this to you. Plus it comes with a CD of the live tracks as an added incentive.

Please forgive me for my sins, yes I swam dirty waters, but you pushed me in.

New Zealand Fashion Festival and what it taught me-Part 1.

Last week was the New Zealand Fashion Festival and because it coincided with the start of a new year at University the week was incredibly crazy, in the best possible way! I met so many people, got to help out at NZ Girl's stand for the Designer Garage Sale and even learnt some valuable pointers at the 2 seminars I attended, more on that shortly. It was a lot of fun and a fantastic opportunity for Auckland to embrace fashion in the mainstream.
