The Extras: Auckland Eats

I may be biased being an Aucklander and all but in the last few years it seems like all these amazing culinary places have magically appeared. It's like that moment in Harry Potter when the food just appears before everyone's eyes. I'm not complaining because it means there's always somewhere around to find delicious treats to enjoy. If you're from Auckland you may have already frequented some of these. If you're not from around these parts and are looking for somewhere to eat tasty food then read on. I take no responsibility for any impromptu Saturday food trips...

Orleans-As tempted as I am to write about this one in a Southern dialect I will spare y'all (whoops) the pain. In case the name didn't act as a giveaway, Orleans is home to Southern comfort food. If you're a curly fries fan, you need to get some of those to start and share around your table. You can't go past the Chicken Waffle either. It sounds unusual, but trust me it is good. Their jugs of punch go down a treat as well. I really love the decor in here too. One of my friends described it as a "hipster's heaven" which is rather accurate.

Bluebells Cakery-If you follow me on Instagram you are bound to have seen at least one cupcake themed snap from Bluebells in my feed. They do the best cupcakes in Auckland. Now that's a bold claim, but it's one I stand by. Their sweet treats are never too sweet and the icing is never sickly. Wins in my books. It's a bit of a drive to get to Bluebells but it's well worth the visit. You can't go past their cupcakes or coconut ice. Hannah tells me the caramel slice is amazing too if you're a fan of that. Wash that cake down with one of their milkshakes in a jar. You won't regret it!

Mexico-Mexico is my favourite place to go with friends for a good old fashioned catchup. A lot of their dishes are designed to be shared so it's great if you're on a budget and want a cheaper dining option. You also get to try a lot more that way as well! I am obsessed with their Virgin Margaritas for drinks but their alcoholic options are pretty good as well. They change up the menus regularly at Mexico so I don't really have a favourite dish because I can never remember the names. If you're unsure ask their friendly staff for recommendations.

Milse-Milse, Milse, Milse. Oh how I love thee. Truth be told I have only dined in at Milse once because it is tiny and always busy. That should give you an idea of how good it is. Milse is a dessert restaurant. They have amazing sodas and of course amazing desserts. Again the portions are smaller so if you want to share desserts among friends you can. They also have a cabinet of takeaway options too. Their macarons are divine. Sometimes I make a sneaky 'lil trip post class there just to get a couple. If you can get yourselves there and have a sweet tooth you will not regret it.

*Where are your favourite places to dine out in Auckland? If you're not from Auckland, tell me one of your favourite places to dine at in your town. I'm sure we all love recommendations!

  4. I haven't been to Bluebells, sadly, but the others are brilliant. I'll also throw in the Chinese places on in and around Balmoral on Dominion Rd (such variety), Satya (South Indian, so a little different from your average Indian takeaways), any of the Hip Group cafes (Takapuna, Kohi etc along with Milse/Ortolana which you mentioned), and Good One for the coffee aficionados. So many others! There's really been a explosion of exciting new places.
