Magazine Marvels & Long Distance Pen-Pallery
I suggest you settle in with a coffee or whatever beverage takes your fancy right now because it's going to be a long one. Myself and one of my Internet pen-pals Liv bonded over our love of many things; magazines, stationery, the She & Him Christmas album, just to name a few. It is the first item on that list though that inspired a lil' magazine exchange. I think this may be something we try to do more often because it was a fun time and who doesn't like getting snail mail? More so magazines from faraway places. Quite literally the other side of the world. Liv got all her picks for me spot on and I badly wanted to spend all day long reading them but as we all know, the magazine-reading experience is best savoured. Anyway, details....
Lionheart: Liv is actually one of Lionheart's contributors and I'd been meaning to track down a copy of this for ages but somehow never did. *taps wrist*. Firstly, I love the handbag friendly size of this one. I've been slipping it into my bag between notebooks and the book I'm reading. Yes I don't pack light and never will. It's crammed with inspirational, positive, uplifting articles, interviews, stories and ideas,. It is wonderfully designed and quite simply an exquisite publication. This issue has a feature on books too so that of course has me sold. There's florals aplenty too which I love.
Sunday Girl: Another magazine I'd heard about through Liv. I actually found the previous issue in, of all places, the newsagents near my work. The last issue felt a bit more zine-y and this feels a bit more grown up but still just as inspiring. In fact, seeing as some of you will be reading this on International Women's Day (March 8th), might I suggest you track down a copy of this. Published biannually, this 'fashion magazine for intellectual girls' doesn't scrimp on the important issues we women face and makes time for the fun vibrancy of fashion and art that we love. Case in point; these beautiful images you see above.
Oh Comely: I bloomin' love Oh Comely and have made it my unofficial mission to get more people on the bandwagon this year. Fun fact; when I was in the UK almost eight years back, I stumbled upon an early edition of this in WH Smith. I no longer have it because it met a sad demise in a bathtub and I couldn't find another copy. Trust me, I tried to track one down. Anyway, flash forward several years and I'm back in love with this gem. This issue in particular is brilliant, with an essay on the art of dress up by Rosalind Jana, interviews with Scarlett Curtis and Dolly Alderton, the fantastic story you see above on self-love and kindness, their regular book feature which I always love and more. I'm seriously considering subscribing to this one, if only because my impatience at waiting months for the newsagents near my house to get their stock in frustrates me no end. That and I love it and wouldn't be upset to see it arriving in my mailbox. Ever.
Cherry Bombe: Not sure if Liv saw my tweets contemplating buying Cherry Bombe but either way I kinda did a metaphorical dance when I say this included. When I worked in a magazine shop I always made a beeline for this and it is a beautiful magazine. Yes this is one for the foodies; the enthusiasts, the eaters and of course the makers. Lately I've really been getting back into making things; food and otherwise so I think this magazine will really inspire me in that regard. That and it's just beautiful design-wise. I've actually ordered the Cherry Bombe cookbook from the local library too so my fix can last a little longer.

The Glossy Edit: Summer 18
It's not a well guarded secret that I love magazines. I've even been called magazine girl, which let's be honest, is far more complimentary than my self-inflicted moniker of 'the mag hag'. Today we have a quintet of glossy, and matte papery loves. Some new, some rediscovered. All well designed, all brilliant. Myself and the wonderful Liv have also recently done a magazine swap so you'll hear all about that in due course as well. Anyway, if magazines make your heart soar as much as they do mine, keep reading...
Betty: It's probably uncool of me to include this one here, seeing as the print incarnation no longer exists. Charlotte Jacklin, one of the founders and current brainchild+expert enabler, announced she was selling up old stock and I leapt at my chance to grab a couple of these annuals. They're beautiful magazines and while I wish I'd discovered them much, much earlier than I did, I am loving soaking up all their beauteousness. Don't fret though because Charlotte's website, weekly newsletter and other Internet-goodness more than make up for the magazine's absence. In fact, I strongly recommend you head there for a peruse.
Fete/Life: If there was a magazine that was a physical embodiment of the well designed, tranquil, carefully curated sanctuary I hope to have someday, this would be it. In fact, Liv if you're reading I don't know why I didn't send you this because you'd love it. This issue is built around the idea of having the holiday mindset year-round. Fete/Life is a mix of interiors, design, style, wellbeing and a smattering of travel. Its minimalist design and simplicity makes it a treat to flick through. That and you will want to tear out inspiration pages+bookmark all the lustworthy and useful things. It's an Australian publication and you can buy it online. Aucklanders-I've seen it in well stocked bookstores but Mag Nation on Ponsonby Rd is your best bet for acquiring a copy.
No Man's Land: So this magazine doesn't ship to New Zealand, I got around that using YouShop which admittedly was not a cost-effective way but I was determined to get my hands on a copy. As they put it on the site, this magazine is brought to you by the people from The Wing and it's for women "with something to say and nothing to prove". In short, if feminism, gender equality and women doing awesome things are your jam-get this right now. The whole magazine was crammed with brilliant content but the one story that particularly stood out was women taking on emotional labour in the workplace and the impacts it has across the board. That and an article about feminist magazines that have come before No Man's Land.
Violet: Another magazine that's a bit on the luxe side, especially to ship here to little ol' NZ but honestly, so so worth it. I've written about Violet before and again, my love of Leith Clark's work is well documented. One thing I love about Violet is that it always shines the light on changemakers and emerging talent. It's an exquisite treat of a magazine and you will find yourself reading every last word before stowing it safely away like a glossy treasure. In fact, reading Violet does always take me a while but that's one of the many reasons I love it.
Riposte: Another magazine I've featured before is Riposte, a brilliant magazine for women. I love the balance of content and its always inspiring, informative nature. As well as a cover story with Janet Mock, there are also features on the young fans of Graceland, embracing your inner emo, modern witchcraft and the housing crisis to name but a few. This is one of my designated trainside reads as it's easy to immerse yourself in and disappear for a while.

The September Issues, 2017
Another September-y post, this time about one of the iconic times in the editorial calendar. While it seems like print is a dwindling thing sometimes, RIP Nylon, in many corners there are still titles going strong and indie tomes for us to peruse and marvel. I don't care what the iPad, tech crowd might argue. You cannot beat the experience and joy that is flicking through a physical magazine. September seems to seasonally be a big time for the magazines and it's where a lot of advertising expenditure goes. It also though is known for getting readers excited, sharing new ideas and breaking new ground. Today I have some snippets of what to expect in these September issues for you...
British Vogue: Ahh BV, my longterm paper lover. This issue is particularly significant and in many ways bittersweet, as it is the last issue under Alexandra Shulman's editorship at the magazine. 306 issues in 25 years is quite a feat. To commemorate this, there is a full fold-out spread of every single one of her covers. I'm still trying to work out which was actually the first one I remember seeing. The cover also features a mix of iconic models, most notably Kate Moss who often paired with the magazine for iconic covers. Last year's Rolling Stone tribute for one, another with Bowie inspired makeup, one from 2008 encased in a layer of cream tulle, the latter which I actually own. If you grab one September issue, make it this. It is a treat in every sense of the word.
Frankie: While not strictly a September issue in the fashion-y sense of things, I couldn't not do a post about magazines and not use it as another opportunity to mention one of my all-time favourite publications. Frankie's August+September issue is laden with a bunch of awesome content. One of the best features for me was finding out what books Australian creatives love and have inspired their work+identity. There's also a handy, and beautifully illustrated guide to Australian plants, a tribute to Susan Sarandon, an editorial dedicated to one of my favourite places; bed and plenty of witty copy to keep this Frankie fan incredibly happy.
American Vogue: The September issue, if ever there was one comes produced by Anna Wintour and her team. This issue clocking in at around 600 pages, a good hundred or so are ads FYI, commemorates their 125th anniversary. It's covered by Jennifer Lawrence in a series of images, the international edition seems to have the moody, Statue of Liberty backdrop on it. There is also this gold beauty above, by Inez and Vinoodh I believe as well as a couple of other choices. Iconic cover choice aside, there is also stories devoted to US Vogue trailblazers, Cindy Crawford being one but also current favourites like Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid. It's definitely more of a visual magazine to flick through rather than read, at least the September issue seems to be more about photos than anything else. Like a grown-up children's book for fashion lovers.
Glamour UK: My reaction to this cover, cheekily out of shot was "Yassss Blake/Serena/Bridget". Extremely uncool but justified. This is their honesty issue, timely given the current state of the world. As always, it is packed with inspiring content, fashion and wardrobe ideas aplenty and some of the best beauty pages around. A++ worth grabbing when you see it in the supermarket or newsagents.
Teen Vogue: This time of year, well October actually signals the arrival of Teen Vogue's Young Hollywood issue. Due to Teen Vogue's revamp though it has been reframed as the Icons issue and is covered by; Amandla Stenberg, Millie Bobby Brown (ELEVEN *insert waffle emojis and heart eyes here*) and Kaia Gerber (aka Cindy Crawford 2.0). One of my favourite features was a column by Lauren Duca about why we can care about politics and fashion and not be slammed for it but I also enjoyed Millie's interview with Drew Barrymore as well as the editorial featuring up and coming acting talent as well as sporting stars too.

Magazines Read & Liked, #4
Hello, happy Wednesday and welcome back to another post about one of my all time favourite things. Magazines. Such great poetry skills, I know, I know. I've actually not really stepped outside my magazine comfort zone much recently; that being British Vogue and, er, British Vogue but I have squeezed in some reading time with this quartet of glossy goodness. Some of these mightn't be available anymore but I will try to provide links to buy them if they are still around...
The Gentlewoman: This gigantic tome is always a treat. It is laden with brilliant, clever stories and editorials throughout. It's a well designed, aesthetically pleasing magazine too which makes it all the more appealing. The Spring/Summer issue featured a cover story with Sofia Coppola, who I love. She was discussing her new film The Beguiled which I seriously need to see asap, among other things. If you want a read for a long plane trip, beachside or perhaps snuggled under some blankets in Wintry NZ, this is for you.
Glamour Magazine (UK): Glamour magazine hasn't been on my radar for a while but after listening to this podcast episode featuring editor Jo Elvin, I was inspired to pick it back up again. The latest issue featured all their women of the year winners; including Sam and Nic from Pixiwoo, Amy Poehler, Nicole Kidman among others. It also included a column from Dawn O'Porter which I loved because I'm a Dawn fangirl, we all know that. There were some brilliant articles on stress and mindfulness included as well which were particularly timely for me. I'm not sure how often Glamour is released here but I will definitely be keeping an eye out for the next issue.
Violet: The newer brainchild of Leith Clark, the genius who used to edit Lula magazine. Violet, like The Gentlewoman is another hefty tome but it makes it all the more brilliant. There's more content to enjoy for one. Inspired by the recent women's marches, it's focused around getting women inspired and geared up for positive change in society. I haven't had a chance to really savour this properly yet but I will keep you posted on it because I'm sure it's going to be good.
Puss Puss: Last year when I worked in a magazine shop, I remember seeing this and being wildly confused by the title. My gutter mind instantly assumed it was a vulgar reference but in fact, it is actually a magazine combining two of my loves. That being cats and fashion. I'm not sure if the latest issue is still around but it featured Grace Coddington, the queen of cat ladies and of course her cats, Bart and Pumpkin. It's a bit artsier than some of these other reads so if that kind of content is your jam, you might enjoy that side of things as well. It also features some brilliant interviews and imagery too. It's one you will want to hold on to and save for inspiration later on.

Magazines Read & Liked, #3
Magazines are my one and only, my ride or die. That's no secret to anybody that knows me, or anyone who has read this blog long enough. I'm sure like many of us, I spend a large portion of my days looking at screens and unwinding with a magazine and the knowledge that my phone is off are some of my greatest pleasures. You just cannot beat a magazine, on paper, especially if it's that thick stock some publishers love. Shout out to Frankie, The Plant, et al. Being a magazine lover means I am always on the lookout for new magazines, or magazines that aren't exactly new but are to me. Today I have four of my recent finds and loves to share. They're all a bit niche and are very exquisite.
Oh Comely: I actually came across Oh Comely when I was in London, centuries ago in 2010 and I recently discovered that my local newsagent sells it. Admittedly, waiting months for it to arrive is a bit of a nuisance, sea freight is the bane of my magazine loving existence. It is worth the wait though. Oh Comely is a British magazine, published bimonthly that follows a theme and is filled to the brim with fashion, photography and art by talented people, usually ladies. Recent issues have focused on things like magic and strength which let's be real, the world needs a heck of a lot more of. If you're a fan of frankie then I think you will love this. Where to find me in NZ: Mag Nation, Ponsonby*, Paper Power.
Apartamento: This purchase was inspired after I dragged a friend to Mag Nation here in Auckland, and because I saw it on Albertine's Instagram and she has great taste. It is a largely interiors themed magazine but it is also for individuals "who are passionate about the way they live". Unsurprisingly, this publication, released biannually is impeccably designed. Alongside captivating imagery are engaging articles with creative people about their spaces and art. It's a bit on the pricey side here in NZ but it's perfect if you're into aesthetics and want to treat yo'self. Where to find me: Mag Nation and Magnetix, Wellington.
Suitcase: A tome of travel and free-spirited goodness. Suitcase first came to my attention via Amelia who if I am remembering correctly, used to be one of their contributing editors. Suitcase is the perfect size to fit into your travel bag of choice and is a travel magazine you will want to read. This may be a potentially unpopular opinion but I feel like most travel publications, the ones I've seen at least, veer on the dull side of things but Suitcase is thankfully far from dull. Published quarterly, each issue is usually themed around different countries and cities. The one pictured was interested in the idea of myths and legends+stories from faraway places. It contained a writeup on the legends and lesser known secrets of Oxford by Rosalind Jana, a handy guide to beauty products 100ml or under to take on your travels and photographic explorations of national parks in America, the mystical landscapes of Scotland and more. It's fairly inexpensive, I want to say it is $15 or less here in New Zealand which for an imported magazine is pretty decent, so I recommend you nab a copy. Where to find me: Mag Nation and Magnetix.
The Plant: This time, an Estee inspired acquisition. Side note: her love for magazines rivals mine so I suggest you head to her channel where she shares recommendations from time to time. A magazine for all the greenery lovers and a place where creative people+their love of flora and fauna come to party. Well not party, more like share their magic on paper. Each issue is themed around a particular plant, the one pictured was inspired by geraniums. Again, this is a beautifully presented and designed publication. I can't seem to find information about how often it is released, it seems to be yearly though. Where to find me: Mag Nation, although because this one is a bit more elusive you may wish to contact them first before heading there.

On the plus side, next week is Adele week so that will help the assignment cloud lift. Women's Magazines that I Read and Liked
We all know my love for books is only really rivaled by my love for magazines. Discovering new ones to enchant and inspire me is naturally something I enjoy. Recently I've been wanting something a bit more from my women's magazines. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy perusing the pages of Vogue and Allure. I just have been craving magazines a bit wordier and more idea-filled than what I usually reach for. Today I want to fill you in on three magazines you may not be so familiar with. They all deliver something different and are equally as inspiring. Coincidentally they are all British too. There must be something in those English magazine waters...
Bedboat, published quarterly-An independently published title, Bedboat is only available as a print magazine. The team appreciate the beauty in something that we can all hold and read, rather than cast our eyes across a PDF file and I love that about them. That's not where the love for Bedboat magazine ends though. Inside you will find a treasure trove of ethereal, dreamy imagery and writing that will inspire you to put pen to paper yourself. It embraces creativity in all its forms and does it brilliantly. The next issue is out in January 2017, I backed the Kickstarter campaign but if you want to pre-order a copy you can do so here. Oh and if you're in Auckland you might be able to find this in Mag Nation Ponsonby if there's still some copies there.
The Gentlewoman, published biannually-The Gentlewoman is the sister publication of Fantastic Man and The Happy Reader. It's the talented middle sister in a trio of creative, well designed paper siblings basically. It's also incredibly hefty and crammed with a tonne of content, focusing on inspiring women and fashion+style in a way that never feels trite or superficial. Past issues have profiled woman such as Saiorse Ronan, Tilda Swinton, Adele, Beyonce and others. Issue 13 looks at Zadie Smith and her latest novel Swing Time. Side note: It's a brilliant book and I'm loving savouring every last sentence. Diana Athill, literary editor is featured as is Erin Brokovich among others. If you like wordier magazines that are designed seamlessly and are an absolute treat to read, this is for you.
Riposte, pubished quarterly-Another magazine that is in a similar vein to The Gentlewoman but with less of a focus on fashion. Each issue contains curated content, specially produced for that issue which I think is pretty darn fantastic. They also do brilliant essays and interviews as well. Issue 6 featured a great one with Gloria Steinem and Barbara Nessim. Again, if you like magazines that are a bit wordier and embrace women from all walks of life, you should hunt this down.

The Spring Wishlist
During mid-semester break I've been indulging in one of my favourite pastimes, online window-shopping. Also known as the one where I stare like the heart-eyed cat emoji at the things I'd buy, right now if money were no object. The reality is I may inevitably purchase some of the products on this list but it will be a much more gradual, drawn out process. Unless, I win Lotto in which case all self-imposed restrictions will promptly go out the window. So here's what is on my wishlist this Spring; there's a mix of beauty, some fine paper goods because y'all know how I feel about them and some fashion to round things out.
Rifle Paper Co Herb Garden Wall Calendar-I loved my Frankie calendar that I have this year but honestly I prefer a calendar that's a bit smaller. Here's where the Rifle Paper Co one comes in. It's small, each page contains a gorgeous flora and fauna, or in this case herb themed illustration. To top it off there's some gold detailing on the pages. Swoon.
Hourglass Cosmetics Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick-The one or two foundation sticks I've tried in the past have been a bit of a mess basically. The colours have been off but they've also been thick and just generally not a good time, for my face or for applying. This one's full coverage but in the one or two videos I've seen it used in it doesn't look overly heavy. I imagine you could sheer it out even further with something like a complexion sponge if full coverage isn't really your thing. Admittedly a heavier base isn't really what I go for in Spring/Summer but I'm in need of a new foundation so I might have to give this a try.
Lonely Lingerie Winona Bra-There's something luxe and lovely about Lonely lingerie. I have a few of their pieces and they're just so darn special. I also lovelovelove their campaign imagery and the fact they design lingerie for real, diverse women. Blush pinks and khaki+lighter greens are two colours I'm really digging at the moment. The Winona bra satisfies my yearning for the former colour. It's lacy, strappy and so luxe. I love it.
Tuesday Bassen Erase You Pin-Support the OG designer of these pins, not the Zara knockoffs guys. One of Wellington's indie stores, Madame Fancy Pants is going to be stocking a range of Tuesday Bassen's pins and patches very soon and honestly, I want all of them. I particularly like this erase you pin because let's be real, who doesn't have people or moments they'd happily like to erase from the picture? I also love the Girls flag pin they have too. Get in my life.
Kikki K 2017 A6 Diary Pistachio-Every year I purchase a Kikki K diary to use. It's been that way for as long as I can remember now. The last couple of years I've bought their 'inspire' diary but I want to go back to the classic diary for 2017. It's a bit simpler but I figured I can always pretty it up with some washi tape and things. I can't resist this new pistachio colour either. So pretty!
Byredo Mojave Ghost Eau De Parfum-This is definitely one of the 'if I won the Lottery' items because I have quite the collection of fragrances. I spritzed this in Mecca when I visited with Emma a few weeks ago and she liked it as well. Byredo's fragrances have a cult following for a reason, their Gypsy Water one seems to be a fan favourite. There's something special about Mojave Ghost though. Its notes include ambrette, Jamaican nesberry, violet, sandalwood, magnolia base, chantilly musk, crisp amber and cedarwood. I seem to be naturally drawn to fragrances that contain sandalwood and floral base notes so maybe that's why I'm so taken by it. What I do know is this is such a unique, beautiful fragrance and I'm going to keep coveting it for some time yet.
the gentlewoman magazine-The new issue of The Gentlewoman keeps with my preference for longer, more book-esque magazines. This is one that champions women so I'm even more of a fan of it. Zadie Smith covers this issue, on the eve of the launch of her latest novel. Erin Brockovich is also featured, designer Grace Wales Bonner among others. This magazine's quite wordy which I love so this would be perfect to take on my travels later in the year.

Magazines I Read and Liked #2
Y'know the drill by now. I buy/acquire magazines. I devour them over my morning coffee/in free moments. I inevitably like them and then feel compelled to share the love with you guys. So here we have it, four magazines have read and loved recently. Enjoy!
Kinfolk-Ahh Kinfolk, you mighty ol' thing. This magazine combines the best of all that we love; design, travel, food and entertaining. It's about the simple and fuss-free. The cleanly designed and the organised clutter. Each issue has a theme, the Winter one centres around design and its widespread significance. They also explore the idea that good design doesn't necessarily need to follow all the rules, in fact it may bend a few along the way. There's something relaxing about reading Kinfolk and I've loved dipping in and out of this one throughout the Summer.
The Happy Reader-If you saw my end of year book haul, you'll know The Happy Reader is a bit of a nightmare to find. Regardless, I thought it deserved a mention around this part. I'm pretty sure this magazine is released by the folk behind The Gentle Man and Gentle Woman magazines. Each issue focuses on a literary enthusiast, usually a well known face who we all know and love. Past issues have included Aziz Ansari and Kim Gordon. There's also a snippet of another book included and a bunch of additional bookish goodness. This won't be a magazine for everybody but if you love books you should hunt this down.
Yen-Yen have really upped their game recently and it's one of those magazines I make an effort to grab when it's released every two or so months. The latest issue was their annual festival themed one and features interviews with a bunch of artists who are headed down under for various festivals throughout the Summer. There's also some inspirational fashion editorials, musings about travel and even an article about the mysterious cults and secret societies of the world. I'm not sure if this magazine is available outside New Zealand and Australia but it is well worth the read if you can find it.
Cereal-Surprisingly this magazine is not dedicated to one of the best meals of the day. It's a publication, released twice yearly devoted to travel, adventure and all things us wanderlust loving folk are fond of. If this magazine doesn't make you want to pack up and roam the world with a camera, books and the simplest of things, then I don't know what will.

Magazines I Read And Liked
This may be dejavu but to know me is to know I am obsessed with magazines. In fact, I can scarcely remember a time when that hasn't been the case. In all honesty, I don't buy as many as I used to but I still read a lot, whether it's my own or someone else's. Today I've rounded up some of my old favourites, a new discovery and a rediscovery for you in one, not-so-glossy package...
Yen-When I first started reading Yen it was relatively new and like most publications it took a little bit of time to find its footing. Now it has and it's become one of my favourite magazines. For anyone who likes reading about creative pursuits and culture, you'll probably enjoy this one. They always include a travel section which is worth having a look at as well.
Collective-Side note: I can't work out if this magazine is called Collective or Renegade Collective. Anyway, I found this magazine last week in Sydney airport and as it was one I'd not seen before I decided to buy it. Apparently this is available in New Zealand though, I'm just not sure where exactly. It's described as "the magazine for following your dreams" and it certainly is inspiring, with the odd inspirational quote scattered throughout. Frankie-You probably know by now about my longtime love for Frankie so I won't harp on too much. I haven't actually had time to read the latest issue yet. There's stories about glitter, a teeny tiny house in Christchurch, why Mondays really do suck and more. There's also the usual calendar/poster inside which you can stick on the wall or reuse as wrapping paper. Frankie is best enjoyed over a cup of tea and a delicious treat so add this to your Saturday morning ritual.
Allure-To be honest I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with this magazine. It's crammed with quite a few adverts which I find off-putting but given it's about makeup, sometimes it is nice to pick up. It's a great one to discover upcoming beauty products, particularly from the drugstore. The March issue (yep, we're that far behind in lil' ol NZ) has a stunning editorial with Kendall Jenner as well. There's even a cameo from Marcel, the monkey on Friends. This magazine's definitely one for the true beauty obsessive so if you love makeup and skincare you'll probably enjoy this one.
