It's A Brow Thing

Pardon the exhausted cliche, but if eyes are the windows to the soul then the frames also need to be perfect. By frames I mean eyebrows. They're often neglected or abused by some, over-pluckers and bleachers I am looking at you. You would be amazed at the difference these tools of the trade can make on those pesky frames..

The Service

A good brow shape and tint can work wonders. I'd recommend the Benefit Brow Bar or Lucy and the Powder Room if you're in Auckland. These are my favourite places to get my brows taken care of. They actually listen to what you want and won't go to town with the tweezers if they don't need to.

The Tools

Tweezers The tool for brow maintenance. Mine are from QVS and they do the job. They aren't too sharp and are easy to use. I've heard Manicare's tweezers are also great.

The Spoolie Brush Essentially this is the same as those disposable mascara wands that makeup artists use. These are perfect for combing hairs into place and making sure brow product is evenly distributed. The brow comb (pictured) acts in the same way. Pick one up like this from Real Techniques.

Mac #266 Brush This multipurpose brush is great for filling in brows. Its angled tip means you can use short, sharp strokes to accurately fill in your brows. This brush is great for powder or gel eyeliner as well.

The Products

Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil in Soft Brunette This pencil combines powder and wax to provide a waterproof formula. The pencil is also angled so you can precisely fill in your brows. I find this really easy to use. The pencil is quite hard and waxy so it is difficult to go overboard when you fill them in. The brush on the other end is great for keeping the product in place and it does last all day.

Mac Eyeshadow in Handwritten A lot of people use Omega or Charcoal Brown for their brows but I think they'd be slightly too light for me. I'm not a fan of the overfilled, noticeably drawn on eyebrow look and this shade is quite natural. It means I still look like I have eyebrows once I'm done using it. Mac do great brow colours and they're well worth a visit if you're after one.

Benefit Brows A Go-Go Palette* This palette is available at Benefit counters and if you can get your hands on this kit then you will love it because it is fantastic. It contains two brow powders, a coloured wax to set the powders, a mini eyeliner, eye brightener, brow highlight powder, mini tweezers and a tiny brush. This kit has it all! I've used this a couple of times and love using all the components together. This would be great if you're on the go or off on a holiday. It's such a handy kit to own!

  1. I can't wait to go to the Benefit Brow Bar, you've just given me more reason to. It's my birthday next month and my best friend's 21st so I'm planning to take a little trip into the city (I live in Sydney) to check it out. Brows are my new found obsession hehe :)

At the moment I just use MAC's Eyebrow Crayon in "Spiked" and Essence Lash and Brow Gel, though I do want to look into and try powders and other style products..

    1. Definitely check out the Brow Bar when you're there. It is fab! I've heard the one in Sydney is the biggest and busiest.
